DAUPHIN ISLAND PREPS FOR ANNUAL AVIAN HOMECOMING
More than 300 species of birds will soon drop in on Dauphin Island, Alabama as they wing their way home after spending the winter south of the border.
The annual spring migration across the Gulf of Mexico is so huge that Dauphin Island has been named the Birdiest Small Coastal City in America.
According local birding expert, Dr. John Porter, first time birders never need a guide to enjoy the spring migration. “I have people ask if we offer guided birding tours. I tell them that with all the birders on the island during the migration, all they have to do is ask and someone will be willing to share what they’ve seen.”
Some of the most popular sites for spotting the feathered “tourists” include the Saw Grass Point Salt Marsh near the Ferry Landing on the Island’s east end, among the old live oaks at the Shell Mound, and throughout the 164-acre Dauphin Island Audubon Sanctuary.
From the black and red Scarlet Tanager and the Painted Bunting with its bright blue, green and red plumage, to more than 20 species of Warblers , Cowbirds and hundreds more, spring birding season on Dauphin Island was made for quality family time, nature lovers and cameras.
Across the green East-end to the sandy Westside, birders will find a variety of family-friendly shopping, accommodations and eateries for any budget.
Dauphin Island is just 33-miles south of Mobile at the end of the Dauphin Island Parkway. For information about birding on Dauphin Island, please visit www.coastalbirding.com, or www.dauphinisland.com, or call 251-861-5524. Dauphin Island is Alabama’s Family Beach®. |
