West End Beach Project
The Town of Dauphin Island has received funding to restore the Island’s West End Gulf Beach. The project aims to widen the beach, restore natural sand dunes, protect roads and infrastructure, and slow erosion. If this project is not completed, erosion will persist, and the beach, which has been steadily eroding for decades, is unlikely to recover naturally.
Without this restoration, the island will keep losing land to the Gulf. Other towns in Alabama, like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, already have these engineered beaches, as does the East End of Dauphin Island. The 2024 restoration project on the East End of Dauphin Island was a wonderful success in stabilizing vulnerable shoreline, and we are pleased the Island has the opportunity to protect the West End in the same way.
This West End Beach Restoration is expected to start in 2027, but the exact timing is dependent on funding, permitting, contractors, and other variables. Project Status

- Permits: The required USACE, ADEM, and Alabama Beach Project Act permits have been issued.
- Funding: Construction funding has been secured for the full project.
- Easements: The Town is obtaining construction and monitoring easements from affected property owners through December 2026.
- Final design: Expected to be completed Fall 2026.
- Bidding: To be conducted Fall 2026.
- Construction: Expected to commence Winter 2027.
